A Brief History About Bluffton
Bluffton's roots run deep into prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence pointing to indigenous mound-building cultures along the May River. European settlement began around the late 1700s by farmers and cattlemen drawn to the fertile floodplains. By the early 1800s, cotton plantations, supported by enslaved labor, dominated the economy.
In the 1840s, Bluffton emerged as a social destination, with wealthy plantation families building villa-style homes near the banks of the May River. By the Civil War, it was declared "the largest village on the South Carolina coast." The Bluffton Movement in 1844 protested federal tariffs—reflecting the town's early political activism. During the war, much of the town was burned, but many antebellum homes survived.
Rebuilt after Reconstruction, Bluffton retained its small-town character well into the 20th century. It remained largely rural until after WWII, when retirees and vacationers discovered its charm. Affluent homeowners began restoring historic structures, and the area's natural beauty attracted tourism.
Since the 1980s, Bluffton has seen explosive growth, expanding into a major cultural and residential hub. Today, historic downtown Bluffton—lined with magnolias and moss-draped oaks—serves as a vibrant center. A blend of old and new, it offers art galleries, local cuisine, active waterfront access, and planned communities—while preserving its Lowcountry soul.
